General Outpatient Program (GOP)

Sustaining Sobriety with Consistent Support and a Flexible Approach

At Virginia Substance Treatment Services (VSTS),  our General Outpatient Program (GOP) is designed for individuals who have either completed a higher level of care (like Intensive Outpatient Program) or are looking for an entry point into professional support with a less intensive schedule. The GOP offers a structured framework of therapy,  peer support,  and skill-building—all while allowing you to continue navigating your work,  family,  and social responsibilities

Consistent Support and a Flexible Approach

What Sets Our General Outpatient Program Apart

Trauma-Informed & Somatic Techniques

Many people relapse because underlying traumas and stressors remain unaddressed. By blending trauma-informed counseling with somatic practices,  our GOP tackles the emotional and physical factors that can disrupt sobriety. You’ll learn to identify triggers,  regulate intense emotions,  and quiet the body’s stress response—key elements that safeguard against relapse.

Small Group Sizes & Personalized Attention

Small groups foster trust and camaraderie, encouraging open dialogue and more focused feedback from therapists. With each group capped at 7 members,  your specific challenges,  achievements,  and questions receive genuine attention,  amplifying the impact of therapy.

Gradual Step-Down from More Intensive Care

Moving abruptly from a highly structured environment to minimal support can leave you vulnerable. The GOP offers a smooth bridge that maintains therapeutic momentum while easing you back into everyday life. You’ll continue refining the skills and insights gained in programs like IOP,  while enjoying the flexibility to re-engage with family,  work,  or educational pursuits.

Community & Continuity

Recovery flourishes in a supportive network. Having an ongoing sense of community through the GOP can help you reinforce positive routines,  share new challenges,  and celebrate each milestone. Our holistic continuum of care—spanning Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT),  energy healing,  and more—enables you to access additional resources if your needs evolve.

Who Benefits from the General Outpatient Program

Individuals Stepping Down from Higher Levels of Care

GOP serves as a step-down that allows you to keep building on past progress without losing structure.

Clients Seeking Moderate Ongoing Support

If you require regular touchpoints and peer feedback but need flexibility, GOP meets that sweet spot.

People Balancing Personal & Professional Responsibilities

With a less frequent meeting schedule, GOP accommodates those juggling work, family duties, or other obligations.

Anyone Eager to Sustain Momentum in Sobriety

If you’ve established a foundation but want continued motivation, guidance, and accountability, GOP offers a consistent safety net.

How It Works

Flexible Attendance & Session Frequency

Typically,  you’ll engage in a combination of group therapy and individual check-ins—fitting smoothly around other daily commitments. This consistency ensures you can address real-life obstacles as they arise,  maintaining a sober,  goal-driven mindset.

Group & Individual Therapy

Group sessions focus on healthy coping strategies,  emotional regulation,  and relapse prevention—reinforced by group dialogue and support. Individual counseling offers a private avenue to discuss personal triumphs or stressors and adjust your strategies as needs evolve.

Skill-Building & Relapse Prevention

We emphasize actionable steps—like boundary-setting, mindfulness,  and communication skills—that bolster everyday sobriety. Learning to proactively manage triggers in real-world contexts fortifies your resilience far beyond the therapy room.

Ongoing Assessment & Adaptation

Our clinical team regularly reviews your progress,  fine-tuning your care plan to match your current challenges and long-term goals. If a higher or different level of care becomes more suitable,  we smoothly connect you to those services within VSTS.
